Ballet Grades & Vocational Levels

The Dance Academy’s training is based on the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus (commonly known as the RAD). Annual examinations from Pre-Primary in Dance through to Vocational levels are available for students wishing to follow this examination system. Exams are always lots of fun, it gives students a goal and chance for their skills to be formally recognised. All students wishing to enter for exams must fulfil class attendance requirements and achieve the Dance Academy’s technical standard.

National Character

Adding to the fun of our ballet classes RAD students are given the opportunity to learn character work - dances from different countries. They get to wear character skirts and shoes developing awareness of history and costume. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of various rhythms and time signatures. It also introduces students to storytelling and develops acting skills that enhance the students’ performances.

Modern Jazz

Our modern Jazz is based on the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD) syllabus. Jazz dance classes are available to students from 4 years old, with students having the opportunity to enter annual examinations. Students also have the opportunity to enter Medal Tests where they perform Jazz dance solos. Team medal examinations are also an option.

Jazz/Funk & Hip Hop

An open class designed to introduce students to fun dance routines and exercise. Perfect for both beginner dancer and the more experienced student. These classes extend technique and style whilst enabling students to think and perform beyond the structure of a set syllabus. Students have the opportunity sit medal exams.

Contemporary

Our contemporary classes are based on the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD) syllabus. It is recommended that senior classical ballet students attend a contemporary lesson as part of their weekly programme to assist with dynamics, strength, agility, body and spatial awareness. Teaching students to understand the concepts of contemporary movement such as weight, flow, momentum, and the use of gravity, they continue to enjoy a sense of dance while focusing on freedom of movement and spacial awareness.  Our classes also include improvisation, an important part of a dancers development and a great alternative for students with an interest in musical theatre and drama. It helps to develop confidence in creative movement, storytelling and choreography.

Private Tuition/Competition Work (all ages)

These classes are excellent if you want extra performance opportunities, building a repertoire for different auditions, working towards a talent quest or speech competition or for just gaining more confidence. DW Dance Academy training sessions will give you the opportunity to improve your skills for an upcoming exam or to provide the opportunity for national competition solo work. Competition Solo  opportunities are offered to all students who show a commitment to their class work and have a passion for performance.
